Library Fun & More

Today we were able to attend library orientation.  I am so thrilled to have a class of students who love to read!  Aren't they cute?

We're off to a great start for this 2nd week of school!  We are continue to learn our daily/weekly routines and expectations. 

Write spelling in ABC order in agenda.
Match vocabulary words to definitions.
Study for multiplication speed test (Wed.).
Finish math WB p. 5-6 if you didn't finish in class.  (Students circled the numbers to complete on p. 5.  Complete all of p. 6.)

DUE THURSDAY: Illustrate each vocabulary word with a simple drawing that will help you remember the definition. Do this on notebook paper, after your heading. Your work should be numbered, have the vocabulary word written, then followed by the illustration.

IRA (Independent Reading Activity) Weekly Task Week 2:

Reading Comprehension Strategy: Predicting & Monitoring

Write down the title of your AR book. Make three predictions about your new book. Use the title, jacket description, and first few pages to help you make your predictions. If you've already started reading your book, then make a few predictions about what you think will happen. (Skip several lines between each prediction.)

As you read, see if your predictions happen or not. Write a response to each prediction. (Explain what did happen.) Turn in this assignment by Friday.

First Day of School

Today has been my best first day since I started teaching fifth grade here at UCES 15 years ago!  Your children are delightful!

Be sure to initial the agenda each school night.

Each child received a list of spelling and vocabulary for this week (test Friday).  The sheet explains everything that they need to do, but here it is in a nutshell:
The required homework (HW) for tonight is to write the 20 spelling words in ABC order in the agenda (NOT on a sheet of notebook paper to turn in, but actually in the agenda).  It's okay if they need another sheet to help them alphabetize, but I am only looking at the words in the agenda.

Spelling 3 times each is due Thursday.  We started it in class today so that they would understand my format.  We will NOT do this each week; I am teaching some of my expectations and procedures so that IF they need to write them to help study them, they will know how I want them to do it.

Vocabulary sentences are due on Friday.  We also started them today in class.  This week, the sentences need to be at least 10 words long.  They need to underline the vocabulary word in the sentence.
