            A. Spelling cipher: Create a code and spell out your words using your code.        (Write the word and its code.) Be sure to include your cipher key!

            B. Write your spelling words 3x each, two times in print and one time in cursive.

            C. Color-coded words: Write your words using a color-coded pattern.  Include a             key.  (For example, consonants/vowels, long/short vowels, etc.)

Connections

            We have discussed three different types of connections that readers make as they read: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world.  As you read in your independent reading book this week, write down three connections that you make to your book.  Describe the passage in the story and how you connect to that passage.  Make one “text-to-self” connection, one “text-to-text” connection, and one “text-to-world” connection.  Be sure to identify each connection you make by type.  Also include what type of connection it is.  Turn in the connections assignment on Friday.  Don’t forget to include your book’s title, along with the correct heading on your paper.

It has been such a good week!  I am so proud of your boys and girls.  They are kind, compassionate, and eager to learn.  Thank you for all that you do with them and for them. 

Please remember to study times tables.  Students are at different levels (0-6, 0-8, 0-11, or 0-12) and know where they are.  They all need to know through their 12s.

IRA (INDEPENDENT READING ACTIVITY): What is one of your favorite books?  It could be a favorite picture book from your childhood, a chapter book you finished recently, or anything in between.  It could even be a favorite book series.  Write a paragraph (or more) about the book and why you love it.  Be sure to include the book’s title, author, main characters, and a brief description of the plot.  Please use nice handwriting and your best spelling, grammar, and punctuation.  Turn in your IRA on Friday.

Vocabulary words: Miss Alaineous

Monday-Thursday: Study vocabulary words and definitions each night for the test on Friday.  Work on your sentences or the paragraph activity (due Thursday).

*DUE THURSDAY: Use each word in an original sentence that is at least ten words long.  Make it a Super Sentence by answering at least five of the six questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?  Please underline the word in the sentence.  Don't forget to capitalize the beginning of your sentence and to use ending punctuation!

Vocabulary BONUS: Suppose that you have just signed up to take part in a talent contest.  Instead of writing sentences, write a story about what happens before, during, and after the contest.  Use as many of this week’s vocabulary words as possible in your story.

We have had a SUPER start to our school year!!!  I am so excited for how great our year is going to be.  One fun thing we did today was to practice our multiplication facts with dice.  Fifth graders are expected to know their multiplication facts fluently through the 12s.

Their weekend homework is to get their agenda and multiplication speed test signed and to read.  For the speed test, students completed the first 5 minutes in regular pencil, the second 5 minutes in colored pencil, and then they checked themselves.  These ARE NOT for a grade- this week.  We will have our weekly speed tests each on day until facts through the 12s are mastered fluently. Thanks for your help!

We also had a fun, team building cup stacking challenge.  The goal was to have the tallest freestanding tower when the timer went off.

Unfortunately the blue cups collapsed right before the timer went off!!!  We had a tie breaker with teams Green & Purple.
